About our Club
Championing French Bulldog Welfare
Welcome to the French Bulldog Club of NSW, Australia’s first dedicated breed club established in 1983. We are proudly connected to a global community passionate about these wonderful dogs, building on a legacy that spans back to the founding of the French Bulldog Club of America in 1897 and the UK’s club in 1902.
Our Mission and Vision
Our mission is simple yet powerful: to promote responsible breeding, provide educational resources, and advocate for the health and welfare of French Bulldogs. Whether you’re a breeder, a pet owner, or simply a Frenchie enthusiast, our club offers something special for everyone.
Thriving Community, Growing Discontent and Breed Recovery
French Bulldogs have consistently ranked among the top 10 breeds in Australia, and NSW alone accounts for 44% of the national population—an extraordinary figure that speaks to both the breed’s popularity and the responsibility we share. Our membership is strong and diverse, with 80% breeders and 20% pet owners, united in their love of the breed. Yet beneath this thriving community lies growing concern.
There are just 24 breeders currently recognised by the Club, producing fewer than 6% of French Bulldogs in NSW.
Volunteer burnout, isolation among breeders, and deep divisions in the wider breeding community are compounding these problems. But the Club is fighting back—with education, mentoring, and campaigns like The Healthy French Bulldog, we’re working to restore both the breed and the community around it. It’s a time for honest reflection and renewed commitment. Recovery is possible—but only if we do it together.
Specialty Shows and Events
Twice a year, our club hosts Championship Specialty Shows, prestigious events featuring renowned local and international judges. These shows are an excellent opportunity for breeders and enthusiasts to showcase their dogs, exchange knowledge, and foster community spirit.
Ethical Breeding and Transparency
At the core of our club’s ethos is our commitment to ethical breeding practices. Members adhere to a strict Code of Ethics, ensuring the health and well-being of French Bulldogs remains our top priority. By championing transparency and informed choices, we aim to guide prospective owners toward responsible breeders dedicated to the long-term health and happiness of the breed.
Advocacy for the Breed
Advocacy is at the heart of what we do. As the popularity of French Bulldogs continues to rise, so too does the need to protect them from trends and practices that compromise their health and welfare. The Club actively speaks out against unethical breeding, challenges misleading marketing, and works to educate the public about what responsible dog ownership truly means.
We collaborate with veterinarians, researchers, welfare organisations, and media outlets to ensure that the voices of ethical breeders and informed owners are heard. Our advocacy work includes responding to mass media attacks on the breed, engaging with legislative discussions, and contributing expert perspectives to guide public opinion.
The Club also proudly partners with Dogs Australia to align our efforts nationally and internationally. We’re currently undertaking a research review to support better-informed breeding practices and health screening. We’re also developing resources for councils, vet clinics, and the public, alongside launching education programs to promote responsible ownership and breed welfare.
Whether it’s pushing for better regulation, defending the breed against misrepresentation, or empowering communities through knowledge, we are committed to being a strong and credible advocate for the future of the French Bulldog.
