We are in a very fortunate position where our new Publicity Officer has had a long and varied career as a communication professional.  He not only owned his own ground breaking PR company he was also the Media Manager for the Public Relations Institute of Australia. With his partner he also a successful Frenchie breeder.  Understanding the mechanics of reputation as being on the front line and witnessing the rapid destruction of French Bulldogs’ public perception has created a fire in his belly to work to rescue the breed and turn our reputation around.

His work has already seen a level of professionalism through our website and our communication to members.

Our Secretary, Kerry Wade sits down with our Publicity Officer, Lloyd Grosse and asks some hard questions about the future of French Bulldogs and how he plans to rescue the breed that we all love.

Kerry Wade (Secretary of the Club) KW: Good morning, Lloyd thanks for agreeing to shed some light on the challenges and future plans for rescuing our beloved French Bulldog’s reputation. Lloyd, French Bulldogs have been under scrutiny recently due to health issues. Can you tell us about the breed’s greatest hour of need and how the Club plans to rescue it?

Lloyd Grosse (Publicity Officer) LG: Kerry glad to be discussing the situation.  French Bulldogs are facing a critical moment in their history. The breed’s surge in popularity has led to a proliferation of irresponsible breeding practices and subsequent health problems. Our Club recognises the urgency and is fully committed to rescuing the breed we all hold dear.

KW: What specific challenges does the breed currently face, and how does the Club plan to address them?

LG: The challenges are multifaceted. We’re witnessing an alarming increase in congenital defects, respiratory issues, joint deformities, and other health concerns. To address these challenges, the Club has implemented a comprehensive code of ethics that sets strict standards for responsible breeding practices. We emphasise health screening, genetic testing, and the promotion of sound breeding principles. Additionally, we are working closely with veterinary professionals, industry experts, and organisations like the AVA to raise awareness and educate both breeders and the general public about the importance of responsible breeding and ownership.

KW: The breed’s reputation has suffered due to the actions of a few irresponsible breeders. How does the Club plan to restore the public’s trust and ensure a healthier future for French Bulldogs?

LG: Restoring trust is indeed a crucial aspect of our mission. Transparency and accountability are key. Our responsible breeders already comply with our health scheme, which includes hip and spine screenings and respiratory function assessments – those who don’t should question their status with the Club before our upcoming audit.  But we understand that not every potential breeder of Frenchies wants to join the Club – that’s not a problem – as long as those breeders behave ethically toward the breed and actively participate in our health scheme. By showcasing our commitment to the breed’s well-being and sharing success stories of healthy, ethically bred French Bulldogs, we aim to rebuild public confidence. We also engage with media outlets to challenge misconceptions and present the strides we are making towards a healthier breed.

KW: Critics argue that the demand for French Bulldogs needs to decrease to address the breed’s health issues. How does the Club plan to navigate this delicate balance between demand and responsible breeding?

LG: Balancing demand and responsible breeding is indeed a delicate task. We are encouraged by the post-pandemic trend of declining demand, which aligns with our vision of a more sustainable level of interest in French Bulldogs. We continue to advocate for responsible ownership and educate potential owners about the breed’s specific needs and potential health challenges. Our aim is to foster an environment where the demand for French Bulldogs aligns with responsible breeding practices, ensuring the welfare of both the dogs and their owners.

KW: What role can the public and existing French Bulldog owners play in rescuing the breed?

LG: The public and existing French Bulldog owners play a pivotal role in rescuing the breed. First and foremost, responsible ownership is essential. Owners need to prioritise the health and well-being of their French Bulldogs, ensuring they receive proper veterinary care, exercise, and a balanced diet. Additionally, they can actively promote responsible breeding practices by supporting ethical breeders and engaging in open dialogue about the breed’s challenges.

KW: Finally, what is your message to those who are concerned about the future of French Bulldogs?

LG: To all those who are concerned about the future of French Bulldogs, I want to assure you that we are fully committed to their well-being and are actively working towards a healthier future. We recognise the challenges we face, but through collaboration, education, and responsible practices, we believe we can overcome them. We encourage everyone to join us in our efforts, whether you are a breeder, owner, or simply a dog lover. Together, we can preserve and protect this beloved breed for generations to come.

KW: Before we conclude, I would like to touch upon the high rates of suicide in the veterinary field, including those who work closely with French Bulldogs. The statistics on suicide among veterinarians are a tragic reality. Can you shed some light on this issue and the support available to them? Additionally, how does it relate to the experiences of breeders?LG: Absolutely, it’s crucial to address this heartbreaking issue. The veterinary profession, including those who care for French Bulldogs, unfortunately experiences alarmingly high rates of suicide. It is a tragedy that we cannot ignore. Veterinarians dedicate their lives to the well-being of animals and often carry significant emotional burdens.

Fortunately, the veterinary field has a strong professional body and access to a range of support services to assist veterinarians in their times of need. These services include counseling, mental health resources, and peer support networks. It is vital that we continue to advocate for the mental well-being of veterinarians and ensure they have the necessary support systems in place.

However, it is important to note that breeders, too, face their own challenges and emotional burdens. While the veterinary profession has been proactive in raising awareness and conducting high-profile research on mental health, the breeding community lacks comprehensive data on the extent of this issue within their own ranks. It is a matter that needs attention, and breeders would greatly benefit from increased awareness, support, and access to mental health resources.

By acknowledging the struggles faced by both veterinarians and breeders, we can work together to foster a culture of open dialogue and support within the French Bulldog community. It is essential that we prioritise the mental well-being of all individuals involved in the care and breeding of these beloved dogs.

KW: Thank you for highlighting this important aspect and emphasising the need for support and awareness within the breeding community as well. It is a collective responsibility to address mental health challenges and ensure the well-being of everyone involved.

LG: Absolutely, mental health is a critical aspect that should never be overlooked. By fostering a supportive and compassionate environment, we can make a positive impact on the lives of both veterinarians and breeders. Let us come together to address these challenges and create a community that promotes the well-being of all individuals involved in the care of French Bulldogs.

KW: Thank you for addressing this important topic and sharing your insights. We appreciate your dedication to the welfare of French Bulldogs and the people who care for them.

LG: Thank you once again for having me. It has been a privilege to discuss these crucial matters. Together, we can create a brighter future for French Bulldogs and ensure the well-being of all those involved. Let’s continue working towards a healthier and more compassionate environment for both the dogs and the individuals who dedicate their lives to their care.
